Overcoming Pornography Addiction and Sexual Compulsivity as an LDS Man

Encouragement for LDS Men Struggling with Pornography Addiction and How SABR Offers Hope

You Are Not Alone

If you are an LDS man struggling with pornography addiction or sexual compulsivity, it is important to know that you are not alone. The shame, isolation, and discouragement you may feel are common among individuals battling these challenges, but there is hope. Many men in your faith community share similar struggles and experiences. You are not defined by your mistakes, and through honesty, courage, and support, you can begin your path to recovery.

Rod Jeppsen (1998) emphasizes that “being open, coming out of isolation, telling your bishop everything, is step one in your recovery. It is the place to start” (p. 38). Admitting your struggle may feel daunting, but stepping out of isolation is a critical first step toward healing. The weight of secrecy can intensify feelings of shame and keep you stuck, but when you courageously open up, you can begin to reclaim your life.

The Role of Confession and Support

Confession can feel overwhelming, yet it offers profound relief and liberation. As Jeppsen explains, “The process of confession won’t be easy. As you approach the church building, a hundred times you may feel like turning the car around and returning home. Don’t turn back. Keep the appointment” (p. 38). These moments of hesitation are natural—fueled by fear and self-doubt—but pressing forward is where you will find strength.

Jeppsen’s words highlight a crucial truth: “When we confess our sins to our Heavenly Father and our bishop, our sins begin to lose power over us” (p. 38). While Satan may attempt to convince you that no one could love or forgive you, Jeppsen assures us that “the Lord loves you perfectly and unconditionally and His disciples have been commissioned to reflect this love” (p. 38). You are not irredeemable, and God’s grace is greater than any challenge you face.

Confession, though not easy, marks the beginning of recovery. “Confession is your beginning. No one can take it from you. Enjoy the peace that your new beginning will give you” (Jeppsen, 1998, p. 38). A new beginning can lead you to relief, freedom, and hope for a brighter future.

How SABR Can Help

The SABR program at Family Strategies Counseling Center offers a path to recovery that is comprehensive, compassionate, and effective. While SABR is not a religious program, many LDS men find comfort and support in a shared experience of faith and healing. The program provides essential tools to address pornography addiction and sexual compulsivity, focusing on education, personal accountability, and practical strategies for lasting change.

The SABR approach combines professional therapeutic support with evidence-based recovery techniques. It helps participants develop a deeper understanding of their addictive behaviors and equips them with tools to overcome them. Through group support, individuals discover that they are not alone and that others are also navigating similar challenges.

The Power of Shared Experience

One of the most powerful elements of recovery is community. When you connect with others who share your struggles, you realize that you are not alone. Isolation fuels addiction, but shared experience and accountability build the foundation for healing.

As Jeppsen notes, Satan often tries to isolate you with thoughts like, “No one could really love and care for you after what you have done” (p. 38). These thoughts are lies designed to keep you in the dark. The truth is, you are deeply loved and worthy of healing. Your bishop, trusted support systems, and programs like SABR are here to help you navigate this journey.

Recovery Is Possible

While pornography addiction or sexual compulsivity can feel overwhelming, recovery is absolutely possible. Through openness, confession, therapeutic support, and personal commitment, you can reclaim your life. You do not have to carry this burden alone. Programs like SABR offer proven pathways to healing and hope.
